February 2007

Greetings from Director Ann Weiss
(Updated Feb-March 2007)

A new year, a new season.

A New Website!

2007 brings with it new accomplishments, new opportunities, new adventures and new challenges.

Brand new Ph.D.
Finally after many years of putting other priorities first (after children, Holocaust research, and writing books), finally, finally, I’ve written my doctoral dissertation.

Titled, “Death and Life: Memory, Narrative and Life Study,” it features the lives of two Holocaust survivors – each one bullet away from death – and examines how they chose to live with humanity despite relentless inhumanity around them. Excerpts will be published in article and book format soon. Details will follow.

New audiences
The Last Album and dimensions of its accompanying educational non-profit (501c3) foundation, Eyes from the Ashes, will soon be shared with high school and university students in Honolulu, native Russian speakers in Manhattan, and an all-day seminar with educators in New Jersey, For specific dates, locations and more details, please see Upcoming Events.

New Policy – An apology and a new feature.
There was a problem in my getting e-mails from the web site, so first an apology to all of you who wrote and have been waiting since for a reply, and second, a promise: If you write again, I will personally monitor the letters that arrive, and will respond in a timely manner. It won’t be every day, but it will be as often as possible.

In addition you will now notice that the website allows you to post comments either here or in our Discussion area.

New Ways to Experience the Photos and Stories
There are plans underway for the creation of new ways to share and experience the remarkable Eyes from the Ashes photos and their stories with you.

  • All of the photos will be online very soon!
  • Student Study Guides to be researched, written and published.
  • Researching and creation of children’s edition of The Last Album.
  • Data entry of all research to date, with maximal points of access.
  • Museum Guide to accompany exhibition – adult and children’s guide.
  • On-going process of expanding and sharing scope of research data, continuing to conduct interviews and preserve and share survivors’ memories.

Your Help
To make these plans, projects and dreams a reality, we need your help – both your ideas and your financial support.
Donations to Eyes from the Ashes Educational Foundation are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law, and can be mailed to

Eyes from the Ashes Educational Foundation
POB 1136, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010-7136

The ability to donate via PayPal will be available soon.

Ideas can be sent to me via email at annweiss@thelastalbum.org or to address above.

Hurry! I’m waiting for you to be my partners in the project that speaks most strongly to you.

As Theodor Herzl on September 3, 1897, when he imagined that some day there would be a Jewish state wrote, “If you will it, it is not dream.”

Pick a project, contact me directly to find out more details, and let’s “will it” together!

Wishing you warmth in this frigid season,

Ann Weiss
